How do I connect Shopify to Slack for stock alerts?

Last updated

Key takeaways

For a Shopify Slack integration, use a Shopify Flow workflow with its Send Slack message action, or an app from the Shopify App Store. For one summary a day instead of alerts, Stock Monitor can post a daily out of stock report to a Slack channel.

  • An inventory alert is a message when something changes; a daily report is one summary a day.
  • Shopify Flow has a Send Slack message action and an out of stock trigger.
  • Apps in the Shopify App Store can also send stock alerts to Slack.
  • Stock Monitor sends a daily out of stock report to a Slack channel you choose.
  • Flow out of stock triggers and Stock Monitor both need inventory tracking, so turn on Track quantity first.

What is the quickest way to connect Shopify to Slack?

There are three common ways to set up a Shopify Slack integration for stock. Each connects your store to Slack in a different way.

  • A Shopify Flow workflow that sends a Slack message when a variant sells out.
  • An app from the Shopify App Store that sends stock alerts to Slack.
  • A daily out of stock report posted to a Slack channel.

What is the difference between an alert and a daily report?

An inventory alert is a message sent when something changes, such as a product selling its last unit. A daily report is a summary sent once a day, listing what is out of stock at that moment. An alert gets the news to you sooner. A report is calmer, shows everything in one place and is easier to act on as a routine. Decide which kind of stock notification you need before choosing, because they come from different tools.

How do I send a Slack message when a product sells out?

Use Shopify Flow, Shopify's own automation app. It is free, available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, and installed from the Shopify App Store. Flow has a Slack connector with one action, Send Slack message, which sends a message to any user or channel in a Slack team.

  1. Install Shopify Flow from the Shopify App Store.
  2. Create a workflow, either from a template or manually. Shopify has a template called Send Slack message when variant inventory is out of stock at a certain location, which is the quickest start.
  3. If you build it yourself, choose the Product variant out of stock trigger. It starts the workflow when a variant goes from 1 or more to 0 or less, whether the change came from an order, a manual edit or an app. The product needs Inventory tracked switched on.
  4. Add the Send Slack message action. Shopify says you must first connect Flow to your Slack account before you can use it, see Shopify’s page for the Send Slack message action (opens in a new tab).
  5. In Slack, add the FlowBot app to each channel you want Flow to post in: open the channel details, choose Add an app under Integrations, search for FlowBot and add it.
  6. In the action, enter the channel as #your-channel-name. The message is required, and you can use variables in any text field that has an Add a variable link to put details from the workflow into it.
  7. Turn the workflow on.
A trigger that fires on every inventory change

The Product variant inventory quantity changed trigger fires on every inventory change in your shop, and Shopify calls it a high volume trigger. It also provides the previous quantity of the variant, so a workflow can compare the old and new numbers. Shopify advises placing heavy steps after a condition, so the workflow does not do heavy work on every change.

Flow is the right choice if you want a message when a product runs out.

Can an app from the Shopify App Store send stock alerts to Slack?

Yes. Some apps in the Shopify App Store describe sending low stock alerts by email or Slack. Each works differently, so before you install one, read what it says it does, what it costs and which permissions it asks for, and check its reviews on the listing. Apps are another route if you would rather not build a workflow yourself.

How do I get a daily out of stock report in Slack?

If you would rather have one tidy message each day than a stream of inventory notifications, Stock Monitor does this. It takes a nightly record of stock for each variant, and every day it posts a report to the Slack channel you choose.

  • The message gives your shop name and how many products are out of stock, out of the total it monitors.
  • A CSV file is attached listing each out of stock product, when it was last in stock and how many days it has been out.
  • You pick a scheduled time for the report.

To set it up, open Notifications in the app, choose Slack, connect your workspace and turn on the daily out of stock report. The full steps are in how to send Stock Monitor reports to Slack. If your team prefers email, there is a daily email report too. Products you have excluded are left out of the reports.

This is a daily report, not an instant alert. If a product sells out just after the report has gone, you will see it in the next one.

Which option should I choose?

  • You want a message when a product sells out: use a Flow workflow, or an app built for alerts.
  • You want one list a day to work through with your team: use a daily report.
  • You want both: a Flow workflow and a daily report can run side by side, because they are separate tools.

Whichever you pick, turn on Track quantity for your products first. Flow's out of stock trigger needs inventory tracking, and so does Stock Monitor. To see how Shopify tracks stock and where to check it yourself, read does Shopify track inventory, and how do I check it.
