What happens when I install Stock Monitor?
You install Stock Monitor from its listing on the Shopify App Store (opens in a new tab). It opens inside your Shopify admin. Nothing is recorded yet, because Stock Monitor waits for you to choose a plan.
- Open Stock Monitor. A banner reads Action required and says You must select a plan before you can access Stock Monitor.
- Pick a plan on the Plans screen and confirm it. For help choosing, see Which Stock Monitor plan do I need?
- Shopify shows its own approval page. Approve the plan there.
- You return to Stock Monitor, which starts syncing your products.
Where do I see which plan I am on?
Open Stock Monitor, go to Settings, then Plans. The plan you are on is marked Current plan. See Which Stock Monitor plan do I need? for how the plans differ.
When does Stock Monitor start working?
It starts when Shopify reports that your plan is active. At that moment Stock Monitor switches on its nightly record and your reports, and it begins the first sync of your products. Before that, no stock is recorded and no report or alert is sent.
How long does the first sync take?
The home page shows a banner called Data sync in progress. It says the sync can take up to 2 hours. While it runs, the Total products out of stock and Total Inventory Value cards say Initial sync in progress.
When the sync finishes, a banner called Data sync complete appears. You can dismiss it, and it does not show again after about six hours. The cards then fill in with your figures, and Collecting data since shows the day you installed.
When does my stock history start?
Each night from 01:00 UTC, Stock Monitor records the stock level and status of every product it monitors. Your history builds up from the first of those nights. Stock Monitor does not show days from before it started recording. Each day in the history is a UTC day, so it can begin and end at a different time from your local day.
What should I set up first?
The home page has a Setup Guide. It is a checklist you can tick off yourself and close with the X when you are done. It includes these groups.
- Configure Stock Tracking settings: choose how stock status is worked out, exclude products and set the low stock threshold.
- Setup your notifications: turn on the daily email report, connect Slack, and turn on low stock and out of stock notifications.
Every setting on the Stock Tracking screen is explained in Stock tracking settings explained.
Stock Monitor only records products that are active, published and have inventory tracking turned on for every variant. It does not warn you when it skips a product for this reason. See How is a product's stock status worked out? for what to check.
