How are monitored SKUs counted and charged?
A monitored SKU is a variant of an active, published product that tracks inventory and that you have not excluded. Above the number your plan includes, Shopify charges a small rate per extra SKU, up to a cap.

What counts as a monitored SKU?
A SKU is one variant of a product. A product with no options has one variant, so it has one SKU. Stock Monitor counts a variant when all of these are true:
- its product is active and published;
- every variant of that product has inventory tracking turned on in Shopify. If even one variant is not tracked, none of that product’s variants count;
- you have not excluded the product by type, vendor or tag, or one by one, under Settings, then Stock Tracking, then Exclude products.
The count is never higher than the total number of variants in your store. Excluding products lowers it, see how to exclude products.
Where can I see my count?
Choose Settings, then Plans. Once your first sync has finished, a card shows SKUs counted for billing with your count and your store’s total. If Stock Monitor cannot work out the count, the page falls back to your total number of variants.
What happens if I have more SKUs than my plan includes?
You stay on your plan and nothing stops working. Each SKU above the number your plan includes is charged at a rate for every 30 days, and the total extra charge never goes above a cap.
- Basic: $0.01 per extra SKU, capped at $20.
- Basic+: $0.0125 per extra SKU, capped at $15.
- Advanced: $0.015 per extra SKU, capped at $75.
- Advanced+: $0.0175 per extra SKU, capped at $175.
With its cap, a Basic+ store pays at most $60 in 30 days, the same as the Advanced price. The included numbers are on the plans page, and Shopify shows these terms when you approve a plan.
How is the extra SKU charge made?
- Near the end of each 30 day billing period, in its last three days, Stock Monitor counts your monitored SKUs once.
- It takes off the SKUs your plan includes, multiplies the rest by your plan’s rate and rounds down to a whole cent.
- It sends that amount to Shopify as a usage charge on your subscription, never more than the cap for the period.
You pay through Shopify. The usage charge carries the description Extra SKUs, followed by how many monitored SKUs are above the number included, so you can find it on your Shopify bill. It is one count at that moment, not an average over the month.
There is no extra charge during your free trial, or when your count is at or below the SKUs your plan includes.
