How is a product's stock status worked out?
Under the default setting, All variants, a product is out of stock when every variant is at zero or below. Choose Any variant instead and a single variant at zero or below is enough.

When does Stock Monitor count a product as out of stock?
A variant is out of stock when its stock level is zero or below. The stock level is the total Shopify reports for the variant across your locations, and Stock Monitor does not look at locations one by one. When a product has several variants, you decide what counts for the product as a whole. Open Stock Monitor, go to Settings, then Stock Tracking, and find the Product status mode card. The whole screen is explained in Stock tracking settings explained.
- All variants (the default): the product is out of stock only when every variant is at zero or below.
- Any variant: the product is out of stock as soon as one variant is at zero or below.
For example, a t-shirt in small, medium and large has sold out of large only. With All variants it is still in stock. With Any variant it is out of stock. A product with one variant gets the same answer either way.
Where does the setting apply?
The mode decides the status you see in these places.
- The Total products out of stock figure on the home page.
- The status badge on the Products list, which reads Out of stock, Low in stock or In stock. A product that is not out of stock is low in stock when it is at or below your low stock threshold.
- The nightly record, which starts at 01:00 UTC and saves each product's status and days out of stock.
- The daily email report and the Slack report.
- The status in the Stock Monitor block on a product page in Shopify admin.
The status badge at the top of a single product page, and the out of stock notifications that are sent as soon as stock changes, use the product's total stock instead of this setting. In Any variant mode they can disagree with the Products list.
What happens if I change the mode?
When you pick the other option, a warning appears: Please note: changing this will mean how out of stock status is calculated for products will differ to previous. Select Save to keep the change.
Stock Monitor does not recalculate nights it has already recorded. Each of those nights keeps the status it had under the mode in force at the time, so your history can mix the two ways of counting. The new mode applies to today's record and every record after it. Some figures can take up to an hour to update.
Why is a product missing from my figures?
Stock Monitor only looks at a product when all of these are true.
- Its status in Shopify is active, not draft or archived.
- It is published.
- Inventory tracking is turned on for every variant. Shopify calls this Track quantity.
- You have not excluded it.
If even one variant has tracking turned off, Stock Monitor skips the whole product. It does not show a warning when this happens. To bring the product in, turn on inventory tracking for every variant in Shopify.
