How do I set the low stock threshold?

Short answer

Open Settings, then Stock Tracking, and enter a number in the Low stock card. Products that still have stock but are at or below that number show as Low in stock. Low stock notifications have their own threshold.

What does the low stock threshold do?

The threshold is a number of units. When a product still has stock but its total is at or below that number, Stock Monitor shows it as Low in stock instead of In stock. A product that is out of stock keeps its Out of stock status, whatever the threshold is. How a product becomes out of stock is explained in How is a product's stock status worked out?

How do I set it?

  1. Open Stock Monitor in your Shopify admin and go to Settings.
  2. Select Stock Tracking.
  3. In the Low stock card, type a number in the Threshold box. It starts at 10.
  4. Select Save. A message reads Settings saved.

The Setup Guide on the home page has a task called Set Low Stock Threshold, with a button that opens the same screen. Every setting on that screen is explained in Stock tracking settings explained.

Where does the threshold apply?

  • The status badge and the Inventory column on the Products list. A product is compared by its total stock across all its variants, and the stock figure turns red at or below the threshold.
  • The stock badges for each variant on a product page. A variant is compared by its own stock.
  • The stock figure in the home page lists of products that have been out of stock longest.
  • The colours of the stock calendar on a product page, which show days at or below the threshold as low.

If a product has already sold out, see what a stockout costs you.

Can I get a low stock alert for my Shopify products?

Yes, by email or Slack, but not through the daily reports. The daily email report and Slack report only list products that are out of stock, so they do not use a low stock threshold at all.

How do low stock notifications work?

You turn them on under Notifications, in the Low Stock Notification card on the Email screen or the Low stock card on the Slack screen. They are sent when a product's stock changes, and they have their own Threshold on the Email and Slack notification screens. It starts at 10 as well, but it is separate from the Low stock setting in Stock Tracking, so changing one does not change the other. A notification is sent when a product's total stock falls to that number or lower and is still above zero. Each product gets at most one low stock notification a day.
