How is inventory value calculated?

Short answer

Stock Monitor multiplies each variant's stock by its cost, or by its price if you choose Price in Settings, and adds the results together. Cost is the default.

How does Stock Monitor work out inventory value?

For each variant, Stock Monitor multiplies the stock level by a unit amount, then adds up all the variants. The unit amount is either what the item costs you or what it sells for, depending on one setting. Totals are shown in your store's currency.

Only monitored products are added up. Products that are inactive, unpublished, untracked or excluded are left out.

Should I choose Cost or Price?

  • Cost (the default): uses the cost per item you have entered in Shopify. The total is what your stock cost you.
  • Price: uses the price of each variant in Shopify. The total is what your stock would sell for at its current price.

If a variant has no cost in Shopify, it adds nothing to the Cost total, and a product where no variant has a cost shows a value of zero. Adding costs in Shopify gives a more accurate Cost total.

How do I change it?

  1. Open Stock Monitor in your Shopify admin and go to Settings, then Stock Tracking.
  2. In the Inventory value mode card, choose Cost or Price.
  3. Select Save.

The other cards on that screen are explained in Stock tracking settings explained.

Is there a Shopify inventory value report?

Stock Monitor does not have a separate report page for inventory value. It shows the value in these places instead.

  • On the home page, the Total Inventory Value card. Hover over its title to see whether it is based on cost or price.
  • On the Products page, the Total Inventory Value card at the top and the Inventory Value column in the list.
  • The list also has Cost and Price columns. They show the unit amounts rather than totals, and the Price column is hidden to start with.
  • On each product and variant page, an Inventory Value chart over time.
  • In the CSV exports of product and variant data. See How do I export my data from Stock Monitor?

What happens to past values when I change the setting?

Stock Monitor saves both the cost value and the price value every night. When you switch, the charts show the other value for earlier days as well as for today. Some figures can take up to an hour to update. You can look at individual products in the products list and product history.
